Default Timber for panel doors

I am making a new kitchen and decided to have a painted finish, we have decided to use timber for the doors with mdf panels which will be painted. Unfortunately we don't have the choice of timber in the UK as they do in the US, my timber yard stocks just pine and that is of poor quality.

What would be a recommendation and where (if possible) could this be sourced in the UK?

Default Panel doors

Gareth,
You must live in the highlands if you cannot find timber, but do use, Oak, Ash, Beech, to name a few English hardwoods very suitable, Surely if you look in yellow pages for timber suppliers you must find merchants around you, here is a picture of some doors I did about two or three years ago all in Oak,

Thanks Derek, they look stunning.

I live in South Wales, we have a timber yard in Cardiff which is the largest local to me, they stock mainly sheet material and pine. I have asked them for some Tulip Wood but was advised even this is a special order.

Looking on Google there are plenty around but the other side of the border in England, I would prefer to see timber before I buy, there are plenty of stockist within the South East but his is a 400 mile round trip.

Thanks, I have tried most of these places, Robert-Price is the largest local to me, they were purely a timber yard until approx. 6 years ago, Robert-Price took them over, they still have a small range of timber but cater mainly for general building.

Gav, Caerphilly Timber Supplies: I called them this morning, they only stock sheet material and pine. The chap claimed he didn't have the storage facilities for a range of timber.

Finding a good selection of species in South Wales really is a challenge. Possibly because we have no manufacturing of furniture within the region other than the usual cheap pine companies.

Working through a Google search, I have manage however to find a joinery that also seem to sell some hard woods which is in South Wales: Nottage Timber Ltd I spoke with a chap and they do have some so this maybe worth a visit.

I just wish we had somewhere with a good selection within a reasonable distance.
