Welcome to the forum Gary. Removing the insert should be a relatively easy process. Unless you are familiar with using guide bushings then I would take a pattern bit and clamp a board to the door frame leaving 3/8" gap between the inside of the frame and the guide board and set the depth of the bit to the panel. 3/8" might not be quite enough but I would start there and then go to 1/2" which should be as wide as is needed. If the grooves for the panel are 1/2 inch deep then you can stick with that measure for the rest of the cuts. I would also clamp a board at each end of the guide board at the same offset to make sure you don't cut into to the frame too deep at the ends. You'll need to trim the rounded corners square with a chisel. All you need to do after that is to make some moldings to hold the glass in place unless you plan on just using caulk to do that.

If you know how to use guide bushings the process is pretty much the same except that you can use a straight bit instead of a pattern bit and you have to add the offset of the guide bushing when positioning the guide boards.

Someone I consider a master woodworker once told me that a master woodworker is not someone who never makes mistakes. He is someone who is able to cover them up so that no one can tell.
