I am building a wine cabinet and the time has come to build the "crate" for the bottle storage. My design seems simple enough - cut slots in the boards so that the intertwine together creating an "egg crate" look.

So, look at what I found! It is part of a shoe rack. It is "almost" perfect but not quiet. The slots need to be enlarged the width of the walnut plywood and the board is a little too short. Otherwise, it appears to be just what the doctor ordered to create the slots in the horizontal and vertical boards.

My tentative plan is to use my exact width dado jig to provide the path for the router bit so I can enlarge the slots accordingly. We'll have to see how that goes. fortunately, I have several of the boards so if I mess up one, I can start over.

I will need to add spacers to each end so it is the same width as the work piece.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

Hi Mike. Looks like a great project. I wish I had enough experience to be able to help. Perhaps all I can offer is to make a model out of corrugated cardboard first and play with that.

I like the idea of a template. That will make the pieces very consistent with each other and will make it easier to assemble. You probably already know this but if the height and width of the cabinet storage area are not the same, you will need separate templates for the horizontal and vertical boards. Also, the slots need to be just slightly deeper than 1/2 of the depth (front to back) of the grid. That way they can be inserted fully into each other.
