Default Another "what router to buy" thread

I want a new router. I will be making through-DTs using my new Leigh jig and since I've never owned a plunge router, I figure that it would be nice to have one so I can make mortises and other goodies.

I've been looking at the Festool 1400 EQ which looks fantastic but pricey. I like that it has a dust extraction port.

Then I got a $50 gift certificate from Amazon (who doesn't carry Festool) and it got me thinking about the Bosch and the Porter-Cable brands

Bosch 1617EVSPK seems great and is a top-seller at Amazon.

Finally there's the Porter-Cable 895PK which seems to have everything I need and want but I don't know much at all about PC except that it has a good reputation here on the forums.

Only the Porter-Cable comes with a way to adjust bit-height for router-table use which I think that I would enjoy very much.

So tell me what to buy and extol the virtues and dispel the myths of each listed, please! Thanks!

I have an 894PK kit I bought new the first year they were out, and another 893 that I picked up used just because I wanted another motor. The routers do a great job. There are complaints that there are backlash issues on the under the table height adjustment, to which I'll admit, but it has never been a problem.

The original plunge base that came with my kit was awesome. The plunge base that came with the used one needed a little love before it was perfect, but it works great now. I'm such a fan of the fixed base, I'm looking for another one to mount permanently to my large opening baseplate.

Based on my experience with these two routers, I have no problem recommending them.

Ditto on the 894PK. I have the set.
Go to the big box stores and play touchy feely with the routers they have.
See if you like the way the handles fit your hands, and the on-off switch.
Look at as many as you can then order from Amazon.

Never, under any circumstances, combine a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

I went to Lowe's last night and I really liked the feel of the Bosch over the Porter-Cable. The PC 893 (is that different from the 895?) plunge-base seemed a little flimsy but the Bosch seemed very solid.

In fact, I was all set to buy the Bosch but after waiting in the ONE line that they had open for 10 minutes I finally gave up and left my cart sitting there. Why do they have 20 registers if only one or two are ever open? Sheesh.

Update: I bought the Bosch from Amazon with the $50 gift certificate. Great deal on a great router!
