Default General Router question

We have been given a CISCO RV110W (Wireless/Firewall Router) for our church. Our church network is setup with 2 subnets. One is for public/general use access and the other is for our office personnel/private access. These are now setup on the router as separate vlans but the private vlan has DHCP disabled while the public is enabled. Our office environment is a Windows 2008R2 domain/Active Directory environment with 3 servers. Two are Active Directory DHCP/DNS servers. Recently, an individual who works as a Project Manager/IT consultant at a local retail company reviewed our existing environment and suggested that we should configure the RV110W to distribute both the public and private IP addresses from the router using IP PassThrough and to eliminate the DHCP services from our servers because this is the industry preferred standard. He indicated that by doing this we would maximize the internet speed through the router.

I've been retired from IT for awhile but at no time have I heard that dynamically assigning IP addresses from a router was the preferred standard nor that by using DHCP servers that the internet bandwidth would suffer. I know it is possible to allow the router to act as a DHCP service device but in most places that I have worked we've always setup DHCP servers in the AD domains and left the router to do routing only or if it is a smaller company and the router was also a firewall then we used the router to fulfill routing and firewall only functions.

So, I'm confused. Has there been a paradigm switch regarding DHCP services with regards to routers? Just asking for my own edification.

calm

This is a WOODWORKING forum, and woodworking routers, not network-based routers.

but, to answer your question - I worked as a Network Admin for 15 years, in a Windows 2008 AD domain as well Our DHCP was always handled through AD in conjunction with our DHCP servers THIS was and I believe still is the "industry standard" At no time did we have routers issue addresses.

I would certainly not speak to that IT consultant again if that is his opinion.

I think this has to be either a prank or a troll. I can't see how you could post here without seeing the page banner, which features a router tool and clearly says "Router and Woodworking..."

Charles, you would think so but...... it ain't necessarily so. People have been missing the obvious around here for a long time.

Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on
or by imbeciles who really mean it.
