Default CNC router vs Laser Cutter/Engraver

Hi,
This is my first post here. As all we know laser cutters/engravers improved a lot during the recent years. However, are the current laser cutters able to mill small (80mm x 20mm, height: 3mm) acrylic pieces (as a router do) with the same accuracy in the Z-Axis? AFAIK, laser cutters may have a better X and Y resolution but Z resolution is just fine for decorative engraving but not so much for pieces production. Am I right?

Thank you in advance for your replies.
