Default Router jig

I am looking for a jig to allow the use of a router similar to the operation of an end mill. Want to clamp the work piece to the bench and set the router jig over the work piece and be able to route in the x and y plane.

How large is the work piece, and what sort of control do you need to have to accomplish your objective?

If it can be done "free hand", the skis might do the trick. If you need the same sort of crank-operated x-y control as on a metal-working mill, you might be better off making an x-y platform to move the work piece, clamped to the platform with wooden cams.
