A "router jig" is simply a device, often shop-made, that holds the work piece and guides the router to accomplish a particular type of cut, such as a dovetail or a box joint or a mortise. The term is often used rather loosely, and often confused with, or used as the equivalent of the term "fixture".

The difference between jigs and fixtures has been the source of many long discussions between woodworkers, with no universal resolution.
