Default Jig Knobs from the past

In researching for my different projects, I came upon a site (can't post links yet) called chestofbooks (crafts section) with pieces of old books published back in the early 1900s by the predecessor to Popular Mechanics. You can find the book on the ArchivedotOrg site: The Boy Mechanic... Volume 2 1000 Things to do for boys has a tip where they use old brass taps with new treaded rod to make the knobs.

When we bought this old 105 year old house, there was a bucket of them in the old shed. I forgot about them, until I saw that tip. Its a PITA to get them here. LeeValley have them, sometimes. When I'm building a jig, I can't wait for Parcel Post to bring them in, all the time. This is a good stopgap idea.

Too bad that there aren't more of these books around today to give young people a chance to put their creative juices to work. I downloaded all 2 volumes, one dating back to the late 1800s. Some neat toy ideas and widgets in those - even pedal-powered tools.

Thanks for sharing that Norm. There are threads on the forums showing different ways to make your own knobs.
