Default This years pine cars

Just a couple of pictures of this years 'powderpuff' derby racecars. Last years cars looked better than they ran, this year we tried to improve both looks and speed.

The girls came up with the designs and did all the finish sanding and decorating, as well as spending a couple of hours polishing the axles and wheels which GREATLY improved overall speed.

Rainbow is my youngest's creation, and it made it into the overall finals where it came in 5th. She received a trophy for 2nd place in the Daisy division. She came up with the shape of the car, and I cut it out of laminated ply and pine. I had fun playing with the new sander shaping it.....

Cocoamotion is my oldests idea, and my favorite. We used a v groove bit to carve out the 'chunks' on the chocolate bar, and cut out the bite with the scroll saw. Unfortunately, after cutting the car had lost so much weight that I had to fill most of the grooves under the wrapper with lead pencil weights to get it back to racing weight. This car came in 3rd in the Brownie division, and won Best in Show for the Brownies.

Punch was my wife's idea. She basically had me copy a couple of her scrapbooking punches. It was a hit with all the moms at the event, and was fast enough to win 3rd in the adults and leaders division.

Big red was my car, and he was fun and challenging at the same time. Adding so much wood to get the shape right, yet still have the car weigh less than 5 oz. was a chore. He did pretty well, earning 2nd in the adults and leaders.

The girls are already trying to figure out next years designs, one of them even asked if we could do something like Mike's handcar...... we'll just have to see!

I like it, Doug, you can not be with your kids enough when they are young. Thanks for the post.

That would be cool to see.

Looks like you have all had a great time. So often the car entered is the "Dads" the only the the child did was hold a light or something. It is good to see a family play fair.

Default 2010 editions

I was just able to help my ladies get their cars ready for the 2010 races, and this years cars are awesome. It's so much more fun now that they are able to do more of the work on their cars, with less help from me.

The cars were fast, but not the fastest. My wife's dumbell was the fastest in the leaders group, my oldest's skateboard was 4th in her division (but the best looking!), and my little one's $5 footlong sandwich was 3rd in her group.

I didn't get to finish mine due to technical difficulties and time constraints, but its about the girls anyway!

Hi Doug

I like them all but for me the skate board has the original flair to it. A great job done by all.

Hi Doug,

great to see a family working together.

This 'powderpuff derby' is new to me. Could you please enlighten me???

My son was in cub scouts from Tiger to Webelo 2 and is now and boyscouts. Even though I ended up helping out with the Pack's race again this year (the guy I trained last year backed out as his son quit) this was the first year I or my son didn't build any cars. These were always alot of fun, and my a couple years my daughter would race one in the open class as well. One of my best memories was I was assembling my daughter's car the morning of the race while I was checking the scouts cars. Not only did her car win the open class, it was faster the winning car of the scout race!! Alas, that was not my son's car.
