Default O Frabjous Day!

Long time readers may remember my infrequent updates on the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Court cases.
Well, said Court just lowered the boom...

Would you mind sharing the significance of this ruling? It's written for insiders and not so easy to understand. Thank you.

OK; I'm going for the Readers Digest version here...
CSA rules our lives up here. It's similar to your UL but a lot more insidious.
Rumours of (alleged) rampant corruption have swirled around them for decades...I first heard of them in the early 80's.
Basically the complaints have focused on (alleged) blatant extortion; pay to play.
So, who is this P.S. Knight, you ask?
For about as long as I can remember he published a handbook which explains and diagrams the basic principles of the Canadian Electrical Code, or at least that portion which is of interest to homeowners etc.
An excellent publication by the way.
Well CSA got their knickers in a knot and threatened him with draconian legal action. They claimed that they OWNED the Electrical Code. Imagine Knight's surprise as he'd contributed significant content to the Code, believing the CSA was a Public body, part of the Cdn. Gov't.
Long story short; don't p*ss off the Knights! He went after them like a wolverine and has exposed the (alleged) corruption for everyone to see. Some heads have rolled at CSA, but they're still a buffalo herd heading for the jump.
P.S. Knight passed away a while back but his son has continued the battle and with these latest rulings has exposed the politicians who have been covering for the CSA. This is just getting bettern' better!

The Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) has also been left exposed over some very dubious decisions re the CSA. Pass the popcorn, please.

unearthing and exposing corruption, Oh, I LIKE that! If there's a bureaucracy, there's corruption somewhere in the tangle they create. And connected with a private agency, corruption is practically guaranteed. Thanks for the explanation, this is good news to any construction outfit and to electricians. And they caught some judges to boot.

To further what Dan said about P. S. Knight, I learned how to wire from his book, his 1st edition back in the mid 70s I think. Knight was a former government electrical inspector and he realized that the issue with a layman doing his own wiring wasn't that it was complicated, it was the code that was complicated. So he wrote the booklet that basically anyone with a reasonable education can understand if they study it carefully. The book has more diagrams that it has text so it makes it fairly easy. And just as a side note, the Canadian and US standards are so similar that anyone down there could use the book to wire their house with only a couple of minor differences. I know this because I helped my brother in Alabama wire his new house two years ago.

I've been following this through Dan's postings and the story is a sordid one. CSA is badly corrupt. If you pay them they will give your product their stamp of approval, often with no testing to back it up. Also, as the article points out, they create standards that become law but without any public review process. And some of the rules don't always make good sense. So like Dan I'm happy to see CSA get ***** slapped and I hope that the SCC and some of our politicians feel a little of that slap and do something about it. CSA has been enabled to do what they do by our government and that needs to stop and in my opinion a Crown corporation needs to be set up in their place.

I read the article Dan posted and just could not get my head wrapped around what I was reading. Thanks Dan and Chuck for making it easier to understand.

Wish my father were alive- he worked in the appliance industry for over 35 years. Part of his responsibilities were AGA, UL, and CSA. If my memory serves me, one of the US agencies had a deal where if you passed the US agency, you automatically got the CSA certification. Again, he could tell more on this. Interesting thread and show how things can be under the surface.
