Default computer help please

Said it before, aint got no idea on software.
I have a 10 year old laptop running vista. It works perfectly for me in all other respects except the following.
I have an even older HP desktop printer. It also up till now has done sterling work and it owes me nothing.

For the last three weeks I have had problems printing and I cant work out where the problem is.

I click print, and it prints.
I click print again, and it stops half way through a page showing "paper jam".
The paper is NOT jammed. I can push the button and it will run through fine. I can turn that same page over and press print again, and it will print, MAYBE. Or maybe it will jam again and again.

I'm wasting lots and lots of paper and ink and losing weeks off my life with this hassle.
I need to print some urgent legal documents and its started "jamming" again.

I have tried updating the printer driver, it tells me its current.
The printer functions perfectly as a copier.

I managed to print several sheets recently by restarting the computer, but within a few sheets it "jammed" again. I had to restart several times.

Can anyone tell me 100% definite if I need a new printer or a new laptop? because I need to solve this puzzle tomorrow but I dont want to spend several hundred quid to replace something that aint broke.
Thanks

I've had the printer apart and its time to send it to that great copy shop in the sky. Loads of excess toner mixed with solidified grease all over one end of the roller.

Not bad going though for a $60 20 year old machine.

Going shopping in the morning, bet the new one will cost me more than the old did.

Bob, that's what I was going to suggest.. printers have a life expectancy, like most electronic items. 20 years... you done good! The new printer will blow you away with the quality.

You will like the new printer and the cost may not be as much as you think.

You can buy really cheap printers here but the cost of the ink is a killer.

Color LASER printers are the only way to go now. The toner is not as expensive as you may believe. You can refill your toner cartridges too.

I gave up on ink jet printers about 15 years ago and never looked back. If our cars ran on printer ink, we'd be paying about $5,000.00 per gallon for fuel!

Go with the laser, you can get a hp for just over $100.00 that will be the end of ink problems, cost more to buy it but if you do not use it for months it still works great
, i would not take a ink jet printer if you gave it to me.

Damn. Youve just opened a can of worms I didnt even know existed.

Now I'm desperately comparing laser to inkjet with only three hours to go till the shops open.

I dont need colour, 99% of my printing is documents for legal and travel purposes. we have good cheap copy shops for any photos we might want printed.

All the new printer are wireless also, if spend $300.00 you can get copier printer and color in one. Toner about $50.00 unless you print a awfull lot of stuff the toner that comes with it probably will last a year or better
