Kills two birds with one stone but it really also needs the bit size noted as well. I always keep my drill bit gauges nearby and they have saved me more than a few times.

I solved that problem years ago. I buy the holes in bulk and glue then on.

Harry, I like the idea, but something other than wood should be used to make it. because humidity changes in the wood will alter the hole sizes/shape. I would go with a piece of HDPE or something similar. I made a drill stand for the shafts of my flat spade bits out of pine, and I've had to open the holes up because I could only pull the bits out during the drier parts of the year, and they were just 1/4" blind clearance holes. Holes of specific sizes would be useless in wood as the humidity in the shop changed.

I normally just use a caliper for that. Ones that read metric and fractional inch are the best for that. An empty drill bit box works too. The holes in them are pretty accurate.

Someone I consider a master woodworker once told me that a master woodworker is not someone who never makes mistakes. He is someone who is able to cover them up so that no one can tell.

I agree with you Charley, I've had the same problem.
