After complaining to my son that photos that he emailed me this morning wouldn't open, he replied thus:

"Turns out Apple are now using .heic files for photos instead of .jpg, the file sizes are much smaller. This format was developed by the MPEG group as a replacement for .jpg, Google are also swapping to this format, but it seems Microsoft are slow in adding support for this format, so that is why you couldn’t open the file 🤨. Only just found this out!"
Paul.

Perhaps if a moderator is reading this, it could be discussed with Cricket.

That format has been around since 2017 and most programs will open the files. It was developed as a way to save space over using .jpg file format. If you have an iPhone 7 or later (and iOS 11 or higher) you can turn that off in settings and still use .jpg format. There are plenty of online converters and many services auto-convert to .jpg if you upload in .heic format.

I have an iPhone 6S so no idea if the forum supports this format. Friends and family with newer iPhones send photos all the time and I don't have any issues opening them.

With memory now *so expensive* it is really important and cost effective to "save space".

What about a Win7 desktop computer David? This is the first time that I've been unable to open photographs that my son sends or for that matter what others send me daily.

There are HEIC to JPG converters available for Win7...google "heic to jpg win7"...pick ur poison.

...likewise for all Win versions...

newest update to Win10 supports HEIC...

...lots of good articles to read before selecting a converter...most are free...

@difalkner

David:

Appreciate the explanation. I have an iPhone7 running ver 12 of the iOS which failed to open a series of photos with that extension. Any thoughts as to why? Also I would like to disable that format on my own phone but have yet to find that switch.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Sorry guys, I've been out all day and power was out even if I was home - new road construction and with no warning they shut power down for 6 hours... ugh!

You should be able to go to Settings/Camera/Formats and see the option.

There's a free plugin called CopyTrans for Win7, Harry. I've never used it and have only read about it but in searches it comes up the most, so with that caveat in mind just search for the plugin and see if it fits your needs.

I've yet to run into an HEIC picture to see if I can view it. I guess I'll run into one soon enough.

You lost me at "After complaining." Not a computer whiz. I rely on my 12 yo grandson for help. I have received emails from known people that won't open when I click on it. Get a blank screen.
