Default How DO they do it?

Yesterday I bought a Kodak EasyShare5500 4 in 1 printer, scanner, copier and fax. In addition to the black cartridge it has a FIVE colour cartridge. The inks, which are pigment based, cost about half that of standard cartridges. A friend of mine with the earlier model tells me that straight out of the printer the ink is perfectly dry, not only that, but it stays put if put under a running tap, where normal inks wash off. There is a high resolution LCD screen which displays numerous menu items, photos can be altered in many ways that we would normally use PhotoShop for. On the front are two USB inputs plus card readers. We now at last come to the title, how do they do it for $125.00 Ossie dollars which at current rates of exchange equates to about $87.00 US dollars and weighs in at a hefty 33 pounds.

Give away the razor, sell the blades for years. The money is in the ink!

I've always subscribed to that proposition Barry, but in this case the complete set of genuine inks cost less than half what I've paid in the past for Canon and Brother printers.

Harry, I don't know how they do it either. I've seen the Kodak printers advertised and wondered. My current printer is only 3 months old so not due for replacement yet, but will be checking the Kodaks out when the time comes.

I've always tried to refill my inkjet cartridges for as long as I could, have to replace them eventually of course. My current printer is a Cannon Pixma 620. 5 cartridges at a replacement cost of around $120Cdn a set. Printer cost new $160Cdn. Refill kit for 12 refills cost $67Cdn to my door.

Brian, at the same time I picked up a set of inks for $A33.00, my 18month old Brother 3 in 1 that takes 3 colour and 1 black cartridge cost around $A80.00 and it's photo performance is very mediocre.

If I were to replace the 3 color and the black toner packs for my Konica/Minolta color laser printer at the same time it would cost $153, more than I paid for the printer. I also have a Canon i9900 large format inkjet printer. It has the usual black, cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, photo magenta, photo yellow plus true red and true green inks. Using quality refills from Cartridge World it is still over $100 a pop but worth every penny. True photo quality prints in up to 13" x 19" sizes.(329mm x 483mm)

Harry,

Nice printer and not a bad price either.

They will get you for the cost of ink cartridges though. I think you'll find that they won't last very long. Even at a cheaper price than most, you'll end up purchasing more. This how they can get away with selling printers much cheaper now.

Kodak has been running TV ads that they don't believe in gouging the customer for ink. It's about time a company did that.

Several months ago I gave up on ink jets. They keep drying up on me. Bought a Samsung color laser for $200 with a $100 rebate.
