Default computer questions

i know there a few computer geeks here, so can you help me please?
I have had to finally dump my 12 year old laptop running vista.
I now have a 5 year old laptop running win 10.
I also have an external hard drive.

Heres the question;
If I try to "sync" my new(ish) win 10 with the vista oriented hard drive that is only used for picture storage and back up files, whats going to happen to the files and pictures that are different?
Will the laptop scrub all the stuff it doesnt recognise?
Will it be unable to read anything?
I have a lot of pictures on both machines. I do not want to lose any of them.

Advice welcomed.

How were you storing the pictures on the external hard drive? were you using somebody's software or just saving things there?

It should see everything that is there. What kind of backup software are you using? You shouldn't lose anything unless you format the external drive.

I used a Photo stick that had a program that you just plug into your computer and click on the start and it will scan your computer for ALL the photos on it and save them to the stick. They can then be transfered to any other computer.

@sunnybob ,
Bob, there should be no impact changing to the newer operating system. The photo file types are not operating-system dependent - unless you were doing something clever with Windows Media Player. But if your photos are tiff, jpeg, etc, there should be no problem.
You can test this out without synching. Connect the external hard drive to you Win10 PC, look at the contents on the drive, then open a couple of files at random. If you have more than one photo file type, be sure to open at least one of each.

Bob, there are some tweaks you can do to make Win 10 look and feel like Win 7. Google and YouTube - too much to outline here.

I'm not good with change.
I can adapt if its quicker or better, but when its change for changes sake I get very angry (lol)

This is the ninth microsoft system I've had to learn. For what I use, none of them have been improvements.
I really miss my commodore amiga
