Default Out of stock?

I have been using Howard's butcher block oil, both the plain and bees wax versions for several years and was quite surprised to find it out of stock at HD, Loews and 2 ACE hardware stores. All 4 sites advised that it was on order but had no idea as to when it might be available. So, I turned to Amazon Prime and received a bottle of each the next day with free shipping. The price however was 4$/bottle higher than I had been paying locally at anymore the above mentioned stores. So much for free shipping.

I mention this as I found it odd that all 4 sites were out of the product. Must be a lot of cutting boards etc. being made during these times.

Any other members noting similar shortages?

Cheers

I've been using store brand mineral oil for the first couple of coats and have a mixture of Beeswax melted into the mix for a final coat. Probably 1/10 the cost of buying it ready made and works just the same because it is the same.

A friend gave me the Beeswax and I doubt we've spent more than $10 on mineral oil in the last four years, have made over 80 cutting boards.

@difalkner

David, I agree with your approach. I'm just a creature of habit and my production is no where near yours.

As for the "out of stock" question, my neighbor pointed out that he had to go to 3 different paint stores before he found enough stain to do his deck. It just seems that stores are either not stocking as much inventory in these uncertain times or products are coming up short from manufacturing.

@difalkner

David:

Do you warm up the oil, particularly the one with bees wax prior to applying? Just curious as I use a small crock pot keep it warm.

Thanks.

Yes sir, I do. The straight mineral oil goes on at room temperature but I keep the mineral oil and Beeswax mixture in a plastic container with lid in place. When I get ready to use it I take the lid off, cover with a paper towel, and nuke it for 30-45 seconds in the microwave to warm a little bit - it doesn't take much.

Noticed a lot of things have been in short supply. Yet I am also noticing the American People are stepping up and filling those voids. I love Free Enterprise.

Also looking forward to when things get back to normal and we can find the things we want on the shelves again.
