Default Ice Fishing

Last Saturday night on cable was a program on "houses on Ice" or Bob? houses.

Do any of you guys from the northern states get out on the ice in Winter to catch a feed?

Sure do. It's fun drilling a hole in 2+feet thick ice, waiting for a fish to swim by your 18 sq. in. of real estate, and maybe, MAYBE taking a nibble at your bait.

James, I'm sure you saw this in the special but the shanty causes the water under the hole to light up so you can watch the fish. Depending on where you fish the results can be amazing. My great aunt caught a lake trout so big the only way to get it through the ice was to reach down and run a rope through its gill, tie it to the snow mobile and use the sled to pull it out. My great uncle was more than a little upset that he worked that day.

Man,

That must have been one big fish! Here in Alaska Ive seen pictures of where the 8" hole wasn't big enough and they had to cut out around it with a chainsaw but never one so big it couldn't be pulled over the edge of the hole and onto the ice.

This isn't a fishing story, is it? <teasing grin>

Jim

Check out that new high-tech cordless router.. wireless and no recharging required!!

Now you should know by now that Mike would not lie....especially about fishing.

Mike, Now that you mention it, It did not click on my brain about the lights under the water.

I did see some of the shacks had cameras rigged. DOH

i do love fishing, but i have to admit, id be scared of freezing my "ice" off.lol

i guess if you put a heater in there it would sooner or later melt the ice?? i mean in the little shantys.

light travels faster than sound, this is why some people seem bright til you hear them speak.

SHANTYS? Shantys are for wusses. I don't need no stinkin shanty. I'd rather sit on my bucket and freeze. The way to do it is put toe warmers in the boots, a warm winter suit, a couple hand warmers in case you need them, and hot coffee in the thermos. Put a heat cushion under your tush, and it can be pretty cozy.

James; the light comes from the sun. Being in a dark shanty allows you to see into the water because the light comes through the ice. It's pretty cool if you have a 3' by 4' opening in the ice. Cut it out with a chainsaw and shove the piece down and under the ice. Put the shanty over it, light the heater, and it's comfy time.

Jim, Tis true that on occasion a bit o the blarney might escape me, but this is a true story. My great aunt who is every bit of 4'10" tall and not far from that around went ice fishing by herself. She used a chain saw to cut a nice opening and sat down to wait. She caught a nice sized jumbo perch (this means 16" in length) baited her hook and tossed it back in. She hooked a little 8" rock bass and was fixing to pull it in when the laker took it! I am hoping I can find the photo so I can scan it, the fish looks like it is big enough to swallow a baby. I know I would be concerned over my wifes dog around it. Anyways the two hour battle for her to get it through the ice and resorting to rope and the SkiDoo is all true. Maybe you need to come fish the Great Lakes?

If it was anyone but you Mike telling this story, I'd consider it just that, a story!

Around here we drive out onto the ice, crank a few holes and fish out the window of the vehicle.
I flew into a trophy lake with a pilot friend of mine, and I watched a fellow catch what turned out to be a 12 pound walleye. He couldn't get it through the hole, so his partner managed to enlarge the hole while keeping the fish on the line. This wasn't an easy thing to do because the ice was around 3 feet thick and required boring another hole beside the first and mortising out the thin piece between the two holes.
