I don't know how it goes in the US, but here in England we have separate pronunciations for Route, (by way of, via, etc...), sounds like Root as in tree root.
And Rout, (To cut, gouge or plough). Well it sounds like the way you say the former!
I often say one when I mean the other myself, such is the entangled confusion within my brain at times.
So you may be forgiven for your error in choice of forums for this query, besides it was funny enough to make me fall off my chair!
