Default Computer Router: im a noobie.. anyone willing to help?

ok so. someone gave me a netgear router for free.. doesnt have software with it. so i got on here and found the software i needed. im not real sure how to open it with the router. like how to install it after i download it. when i click on it it jsut asks what program i want to open it with so yea.
well anyway.. i hook the router straight into my computer and type in the normal 192.168.1.1 and it doesnt access it. it was trying to access my other router so i unplugged it and everything to try to stop this. im really confused on what im doing wrong. if anyone understands what im doing wrong please help
thanks in advance

Sorry! The best way to join a group is to add Your name and location. It is hard for the folks on the forum to identify You with out it. This is a woodworking forum. and Your router is for web use? sorry for the mix up.

You need to configure the IP address on your computer to match the subnet of the Netgear router. So make it something like 192.168.1.2 with the gateway and DNS of 192.168.1.1. This should enable to you get to the router. However most of these come preconfigure for DHCP so maybe just set your nic to automatically obtain an IP address.

Trivial bit of knowledge, here in South Africa we pronounce a woodworking router like you say the word 'out' and the Internet router like you say 'root'.

Hope you come right.

The software you downloaded for it may has to be installed first before plugging it in and trying to set it up. The file may have been a zip file ".zip extension" if so you will need a program called winzip , winrar or 7zip to expand the compressed files.
