from you experts. I've been searching on-line catalogues for a 1.25" skew chisel and there appears to be three kinds, flat, oval and rolled edge. I'm totally confused, which should I be looking for?

My understanding is that it's a matter of control preference, but I'm no expert.

Harry, I believe the oval or rolled edge would be preferable because the rounded edges allow the tool to slide easier on the tool rest. Whereas the flat's square edges tend to grab the tool rest. But, that's just my humble, non-expert, opinion.

That makes perfect sense to me George but I wonder which type Bernie bought, I see that he's still logged in so I'll also keep logged in and hopefully he'll respond whilst I attend to other things.

Harry... for what its worth, I prefer a rolled edge skew like the one I linked to over the oval for most things.

1.25" skew

The one and only exception I can think of at the moment is spindle work. It's easier for me to use a 1/2" or 3/4" oval skew because I can roll it around and over to chase the cut when making beads.

Harry, if you already have one of the square edge skews all you have to do is take a file or grinder after it and round off the edges. That's what I did and it works fine instead of spending extra on a new one.
