Exclamation What is Black Friday?

My son and I were discussing the black Friday sales at the dinner table tonight.

He from a Nintendo, XBox , Playstation3 point of view and myself from a router, tools point of view.

WE could not work out what is a "Black Friday" in the US for these sales.
Members often mention that routers will be a special low price on the Black Friday sales.

Is it only on a Friday 13th or any month that has 5 Fridays, or what.

looking forward to the explanation????

Hi James,

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Thursday and is the biggest shopping day of the year in the US. Most merchants offer huge discounts and sales for the Christmas season to kick off the month long shopping spree that follows. This particular Friday is one that most folks are off from work due to the Thanksgiving holiday and are available to do some of their Christmas shopping. I have never been sure why they call it "Black Friday" though, perhaps someone else can clue us in on that term.

It's called "Black Friday" because its usually the day that retail stores become "in the black", as opposed to "in the red", for the year. Sales from then on are profit.

Just another gimmick the ad agencies came up with to get all the money they can from you. I think it's pretty stupid.
They open the doors, and people that have been camping out for 3 days rush in, and get trampled by the stampede. Fights are commonplace over cheap crap.

yeah my wife dragged me to target the first year we were married I had never been to anything like that before crowds man all just crowding the doors people shoving, pushing, hitting its insane it reminds me of post apocalyptic movies where regular normal people suddenly turn into panic driven rampage as they storm the stores trying to stock up on junk food and batterys.

Dont forget to live life for fear of death grasp each day and live it to it full otherwise it is pointless.

Gene's definition is correct, but, I, too, consider it just a promotional myth. Show me a business that has to wait until late November to be profitable, and I'll show you a business that failed in June.

The real objective, IMHO, is to get people in the mood of Christmas spending, thus reducing inventories by the end of the year, before they are subject to taxation.

I'd imagine that many large retailers would love to have a "Black Friday" in June.

From all the promotional emails I get, retailers seem to be running sales on the slightest thing. It sounds like desperation to move stock. Once upon a time, sales were just in January. Now there is one for every holiday and even ones for both the holiday and the day after, as well as the owner's birthday, the number of years they've been in business, you name it!
Any business relying primarily on the construction industry appears to be in dire straits. The hobby buyers are only the icing on an increasingly small cake.

I suspect we'll see a lot of familiar names disappearing before long.

Cheers

That sound exactly like our retail stores "boxing day sales".

Worse that a stampede at a rock concert......
