Default I was 7 years old in Manchester when this happened

Here is a short film that I haven't seen before which shows what happened in my home-town in 1940. I clearly remember the bombing and that my father, in the fire service didn't come home for two days and he looked like a coal-miner when he did.

Interesting film. I'm pleased that a lot of these old films are coming back to the surface now, so there will (hopefully) be digital versions available for future generations. Of course, whether the kids will pay attention is another matter. Small wonder that history keeps repeating itself.

The difference Bob is that I actually lived through it all and remember it well.

That is what I figured Harry to have lived through that as a child has left its mark I am sure. Were you among the children that were relocated out of harm?

This makes me feel lucky to only be 63.......

I recently saw a movie about the real life experiences of a Jewish musician in the Warsaw ghetto. I cannot imagine anyone going through that war without being affected.

Yes Jerry, I was evacuated to a country town but after the blitz shown in the video, however, as the youngest child I must have been a mummies boy because I insisted on coming back home after only a few weeks.
I clearly remember lining up at the primary school and having a large luggage label tied to my coat with my name etc written on it then boarding a double decker bus which took us all to the country town where anyone with a spare room was required to take in at least one child. where there was space, the government built a brick air-raid shelter in the back yard and I remember my late older brother "borrowing" some builders planks, covered in cement, and a door from the outside loo of a bomb damaged house and he built some bunk beds. Every night when the sirens went off, we left our warm beds and went into the shelter until the all-clear siren sounded. The source of light in the shelter was an acetylene lamp which I now know used lumps of Calcium Carbide and a little water tank was set to drip onto the Carbide and produce acetylene gas. I still remember the acrid smell, especially as later, at high school we used to drop bits of Calcium carbide into inkwells in the classroom!

Not quite Bob, but my first four wheels was a 1934 ford eight van which had no shockies and the rod operated Bendix brakes were next to useless because the drums had been skimmed so many times that only a couple of inches of shoe actually made contact, I know now that the linings should have been packed out to match the drum diameter. I paid 25 pounds for it and was deliriously happy, O happy days.

It's surprising James how we have the ability to put bad things out of our minds, it was just seeing that video that brought it all back. I have just this minute remembered how radio technicians, probably too old to be called up, used to find ways to carry out repairs when spare parts were unobtainable. I saw so many of these clever things after starting my career in radio and television in January 1950.
