Hey Harry, in the past I did use "Christmas" to spread joy to the members by wishing them a "Merry Christmas". Unfortunately some members were offended by the usage of Christmas (I'm not going to mention any names because that's unnecessary) and to resolve the matter I changed to "Holiday Season" or some variation of that. This happened back near the start of the community or around the second year if I remember correctly. My goal is to avoid any potential for conflict. However, it is unfortunate that something so small can cause so much upset.
I tend to agree with Harry on this one.
Everyone knows that Christmas has been, and will continue to be, the most popular holiday of the year for YEARS of GENERATIONS... That's why it's so easy for most of us to just say Merry Christmas!
I have had many Jewish friends over the years & I have always wished them Merry Christmas & they have said the same to me WITHOUT any offense at all... If I know they celebrate other holidays, I will also wish them Happy (whatever it is)... Everyone is Happy.
Now, if they can understand how to handle a popular holiday like Christmas without any problems, why can't everyone?
You said "My goal is to avoid any potential for conflict."
... someone said "you can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of them all of the time."
... Why are you trying to do the impossible? "it is unfortunate that something so small can cause so much upset."
That is so true... How many out of the TOTAL are actually opposed to anyone saying "Merry Christmas"? No need for names... but numbers will do... Out of the total Active Members, how many make it known they don't like Christmas? I'll bet it's less than 1/4% of the total. What you are basically saying is "I'm willing to make less than 1/4% of the people on this site HAPPY while leaving the rest of us somewhat disappointed that Christmas is getting removed from our vocabulary and not being spoken.
I say "If the small group that don't like Christmas & it upsets them from seeing it", TOO BAD... Tell them to grow up and respect our Nation for wanting to use Merry Christmas on the most popular holiday of the year. That's the way it has been and that's the way it going to be. Period.
Now, most of the people will be HAPPY and an unfortunate few unhappy.
OK... That's my two bits... worth no more that the screen it's displayed on.
I'm with Harry...
So, Merry Christmas
to all... and to all a good night...
