Default heat shields

While reading through back issues of wood magazine on cd that the wife gave me , I came across a paragraph that states the Chinese's used oak as their heat shield. I do not know how true that is.The last time I was in China was in the 60's and I was on a island off the coast. The people there threw onions at me.

I guess it's true. Some one sent me this. (The capsule for the FSW, like that of the US Discoverrer/KH-1 spy satellite, was mounted heat shield-forward on top of the launch vehicle. The ablative impregnated-oak nose cap covered electrical equipment. The spherical aft dome contained the recovery parachute. The film reels for the camera were located in an intermediate compartment. Although later touted for use as a microgravity spacecraft, the launch and recovery conditions were not appropriate. - 6 to 11 G's vertical, 2 G's lateral and 150 dB during launch, 8 to 20 G's on re-entry, and a landing speed of 4 to 14 m/s.) So JLord should we get a couple of spoke shaves and head for Cape Kennedy?
