Default Need some tablet suggestions

Hey all you tech savvy folks out there, can you help an old man out? I need to replace a lap top. I'm thinking a tablet might be the way to go. The only thing we do is surf and email and occasionally print.
I'm looking for suggestions for a really good Windows based machine.
Thanks guys

Gene,

I bought a Samsung tablet especially for the US trip and I found I never used it.

I also took my HP laptop so that could download photos and video of the trip.

One mistake I made was to by the model without 3G capacity. This meant I could not do email or surf the web unless I had access to free Wifi - which is every where (or have a plan with a US provider for data download) .

I also used the free wifi with the laptop and had no problems...

There is no facility to plug in cards from cameras etc.

I don't know how to print from a tablet. Someone else may be able to answer that question.

maybe the answers will help me get more use out of my tablet.

Gene, I've used numerous computers for a myriad of applications from a labyrinth of vendors and have found that in my area the Radio Shack stores have been tech saavy. Their prices have always been in-line. My wife has a couple of tablet styles and really has found them to be lacking on versatility compared to laptops - but I guarantee some people will disagree. We all have our own opinions - that one was from me. Take care!

If you are determined that you need a Microsoft windows based product, you may want to wait for Microsoft's newly announced tablet called the "Surface". It will arrive about the time Windows 8 arrives for PCs. I believe the price point is expected to be about the same as an Apple iPad. One caveat: Microsoft often announces and demonstrates products that don't quite make it to market, but they seem to be focused on this one. No idea when it will be available. An iPad is available now, has a lot of apps, and will do everything you say you need. Most of the other tablets on the market are based on the Android operating system used in many mobile phones.

(1) to surf, email and print you do NOT need a windows system
(2) I use (including right now) an iPad. Tons of apps. (Safari (browser) and email included.)
(3) you can print from an iPad if you purchase an AirPrint compatible printer. (major brands offer them). I print from one of my computers to my printer so can't answer more there.
(4) iPad is THE tablet. All others are wannabes. Thousands of apps.
(5) with my iPad and Apple TV device I can show my pictures and videos on our big screen TV.
(6) I have downloaded PDFs of man manuals to my iPad for easy reference.

Printing is the weak spot.

One thing I will say, is the current run of tablets (android and iOS) are very capable. However, they are a great SUPPLEMENT to a full laptop. However, I don't feel that they are yet to the point where one could 100% completely replace one. That said, I think the within the next couple generations of tablet computers (especially with microsoft getting into play) will get to that point where they could completely replace a laptop.

We have 2 Samsung Galaxy Tabs in our home, they run Android 4.03 (ICS). Great for email and surfing and time wasting games. We can also stream TV on them. (through our cable provider). They are 4G and wifi ready. One caveat - they will only print to a Samsung wifi printer. They are by no means a replacement for a laptop or desktop computer.

The big question is to identify all you want to do. Surfing and email do not need a computer.

Realistically running spreadsheets, databases, other computer apps etc, might go further than a tablet.

But many of us do very little of that anymore.
