Jim , you do not mention if you need a black only or colour laser printer. I use an HP LaserJet 100 color , not too shabby, just very slow. Also difficult to adjust toner density.

Jim, we use a brother HL-2270DW. It's wicked fast, wireless and does a great job for transfers. It's just B&W, though.

We use a Brother HL-3140CW which was purchased about 3 months ago when our inkjet printer began printing very poorly and we were tired of constantly buying ink. The Brother prints letter and legal size but does not have any scanning or copying ability. Our main reasons for choosing it was the price point (about $150 on Amazon) and the fact that it was wireless and also uses Airprint so we can print from our iPads as well as our laptops. It has worked well so far and we still haven't used up the toner it came with.

However, if you need a color laser for photo quality printing you'll have to look elsewhere. The old inkjet (when it worked) was better for that.

another vote for Brother...
two of them here.. a 75$$$ 2140 that about qualifies for antique status and a MFC-9340CDW for some time...
Brother CS is outstanding...
machines work very well... no issues...
the Brothers replaced the HP's..
HP sure has turned into a sorry mess...

Thanks for the response(s) guys and will be adding a Brother HL-3170CDW which is the brother to Oliver's 3140cw. Thanks to Oliver's post and threads about transferring on to wood. I'll be trying, experimenting, practicing and with a little luck have some quality looking images transferred. .

That's what I was saying, John, but I was apparently wrong. I was going to post an image showing a photo printed on the laser and inkjet side-by-side. When I made the prints there was no discernible difference in the two. Go figure. I think my earlier opinion was based on printing something I had designed in Illustrator and trying to get a good color match. I also may have been using a lower quality paper. So, the bottom line is I retract my statement.

Still, it's hard to beat an inkjet using a high gloss photo-quality paper to print photos. Which is why I also use an Epson PictureMate to print 4 x 6 photos.
