Default In praise of gifted shop teachers

I suspect that all of us can name someone who inspired and encouraged us to get involved with woodworking. National Public Radio is celebrating great teachers and recently featured Dudley Whitney, woodshop teacher at Dartmouth. In this interview he claims that it was difficult to really know if he was making a difference. But just listen to the students, many who graduated decades ago, that voted him their most influential teacher.

I would personally add two more names: Robert Sonderman and Glenn Duncan, my grade school and high school shop teachers from the 1950's at the University High School in Columbia, MO.

Who would you place on this list?

He's the one that ran his hand through the planer...there's a lesson I'll never forget.

Mr. Hendersen , I still remember him and he cut off a finger showing his students what not to do on the table saw. But that aside, he really inspired me in wood working.
