Default woodworking business

in just a few days school will be OUT! (I am a woodshop / metalshop /drafting teacher)

I am hoping to spend a lot of time this summer working on my own projects, but.. i have been giving a lot of thought about trying to do some woodworking projects for other folks..

in preparation for this.. I have acquired Most of the necessary tools I would need to do most woodwork, and I have the skills to use those tools.

and I know that
1. I prefer to build things "off site" (in my shop)

and

2. I dont like to do the same thing more than a few times.. (so mass production is sorta "out"

so my question is..

how would i go about starting?
how do I "get jobs?"
should I target the few "high end" homes in the area?
or should I consider craft show type settings?

and finally, a loaded question.. beyond time/ materials/ supplies..
how do I figure out what to charge for my work?

hoping someone out there has already done something like this..
thanks

jeff

Jeff I'm going to try a craft show come September. The best thing I could tell you if you decide that you are going to do this is do like I did. Go scope it out before committing to any projects like I found out that shelves and peg shelves everyone is selling. Religous items are over sold there. So I decided to sell my candle sticks, pens and clocks. There was only one clock seller there and he did his with scroll work really nice. But I would check that out before committing

if i was you i would go ask a local good sized church if you can sell your stuff there, thats what i plan to do later on, people do it at the church i went to for awhile just get a E-up and table and there ya go. what type of stuff you like make? if its small bird houses, pens, signs, the smaller stuff that wil go from 20-40 bucks is good selling stuff, remember you want to build stuff that the person looking can buy, meaning keep the price under 40 bucks then the person is most lilkely going to have that much on hand.

I just created a post about selling my woodworking business which I started 40 years ago. I am 77 and seeking to retire.

I have created many items for elementary school music education and devices for those with special needs.

I can send more information if you contact me. Ray Day
