Default Gathering hardwood to work with...

Hardwood is expensive. I am trying to find a source of hardwood that doesn't break the bank. The thought crossed my mind that maybe the do it yourself wood flooring might be a less expensive source of wood for making table tops or coffin sides and tops or workbench tops. Now I haven't done any research, but understand there are tongue and groove floors that are solid hardwood, some quite exotic with really nice grain patterns and when they go out of style are sold pretty cheaply. Understand some are 3/8 1/2 5/8 and 3/4" thick by three to five inches wide and 4 feet long. Some of the packages are quite cheap and cover a good bit of square feet.

Am I dreaming that this might be a good place to get lumber to build larger projects ? Any experience using this stuff ? Thanks Dave

If it is UNFINISHED- then I say go for it. I've seen remnants from flooring jobs on under the 'materials' category, for about 1/2 price.

If the flooring material is pre-finished, then it might be a pain to work with. It could also have less than desirable chemicals in the sawdust if you do a lot of machining on it.

Check your phone book, see if you can find a saw mill or cabinet shop nearby. Both may be sources of cheaper wood, or can steer you to a supplier.

A lot of folks use the internet wood suppliers, some use pallets, there are lots of options out there.

Good luck!
