I like Amazon, for me the shipping has been very good. I bought a couple of fiber barrels from McMaster-Carr instead of Amazon and paid a ton more for shipping than if I had thought to check Amazon first. So Amazon sometimes is the better option.

I agree Gary sometimes they are better. I like McMaster-Carr. Great place to buy from. They aren't far from me and I get very fast shipping. Sometimes next day.

McMaster-Carr is primarily an industrial supplier instead of a retailer, so they have multiple shipping points and work to ship same day so their customers can stay in production. I'm only about 100 miles from them, so ground shipping is next day without having to pay for expedited. If i need a few nut & bolts, i take the time to run by my local Ace--but if i need more than about a 1/3 of a box (depending on box size--say 50 in a box for 1/4-20 x 1 1/2" bolts)--it's only a few dollars more to have McMaster ship a whole box. I'm building a handy inventory that way.

And...i try to keep a list of stuff that would be handy to get so that when i pay the base shipping fee--i can tack on a few other items. (think weld nuts or plate nuts for use in t-track--who couldn't use a box of those around? Jamb nuts, thinner than normal--also handy but hard to find locally!!) The downside--the day after the McMaster-Carr order comes--i need something else!!

Try clearing your browser cache and go back in and see if the items are available. Not sure about Amazon but I know Southwest plays a game where if you look at a fare and then leave the site and go back in later, the specific fare you looked at is no longer available. Once I cleared my browser's cache, low and behold, the cheaper fare was magically available again.

I've been an Amazon Prime member for 1 1/2 years now. Up to January of 2016 they used to be great. In Alaska I'd get my order in 3 days, used to be within hours. Then a new year and terrible service. I've ordered three times - every product was in stock (several). Placed my order -but they didn't process my orders for 6 days - all three orders. Then they came by contract delivery service from the east coast or Texas (slow boat I guess), and finally was delivered to USPS here in Fairbanks, then delivered to my house the next day. Took 18-21 days to get here. Last one 21 days. Totally pissed. Now they are trying to get me to join their 'business' section to get 'free' shipping - what??? - I should have free shipping as a prime member. These orders were well over $100, easily meeting the Prime guarantee on shipping with $35. Doing an order soon and if this happens again I will drop my prime membership as I don't do anything else with it. Their moves are too old that are free and I don't do music.

My displeasure with McMaster-Carr was that the price of the 2 fiber barrels was around $50...pretty good price and they are very good quality barrels. It was after they shipped that I was able to see what the cost of shipping was....$50 for ground. A while later I checked on Amazon. I could have gotten similar barrels for a bit more, but free 2 day shipping. <shrug> Live and learn lol

OUCH!! Yeah, most of what i get from them is relatively small. Wonder if you could have called--but i'd have done it your way!! What's worse is that i'll probably not learn from your experience.

I order a great deal from Amazon. Living here in rural New Hampshire makes it nearly a MUST.

Take a look at 2 services to help with Amazon:

1) Invisible Hand - pops up when a lower price is found on whatever you are looking at (Amazon or otherwise) Free service.

2) Paribus.com: Monitors prices of items you've purchased at Amazon (and a few other vendors) and automatically applies for a refund of the price difference (not all items are eligible per Amazons policies) cost 20% of the refund amount, but I've saved several hundred bucks

Good luck!

Honestly, I have never tried shopping online in Amazon even when I stayed in SF for 3 years. I have been using ebay for years now and so far I have no bad experience. However, I still want to try Amazon when I go back to US for this year's Thanksgiving. Any bad experience to share? If none, then good! :-)

Amazon is now required to collect tax everywhere - thank your representatives for this brilliant move

I have no complaints with Amazon - I've been doing business with them from day 1, 1995 buying books galore at rock bottom prices.

I am a prime member just for the free shipping - everything else in prime is gravy for me.

Same day delivery? I'm in!
