Hi all, I have been doing research on CNC routers for personal use / desktop i.e x-carve and others in this category. I do not currently have a business where i require a unit and have not had experience with the CNC software or units themselves. My opinions are only based off research.

I am interested in purchasing a machine to develop a hobby for myself and to complete with my son.

If anyone can share their experience and recommendations that would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Jack

Welcome to the forum, Jack! Add your first name to your profile so it clears the N/a in the side panel. Add your location, as well.

What's your budget for this CNC? How much space do you have available? What do y'all intend to cut/build/make, primarily? How good are you at the software side - CAD/CAM?

These things will help us to help you on sizing a machine. You've done research so you already know that lightweight desktop machines will flex a fair amount, meaning you'll have to take much lighter passes and run slower feed rates. But they're a great place to learn or to assist you in building your dream CNC machine.

Welcome. There is a separate area for CNC that is worth exploring. You are not the first new member to ask such questons. One of our members has written two books on CNC for beginners. He goes by Gaffboat here, but has written two books under the name Prof Henry. (Oliver to his friends.) Here are pictures if you want to order, they are available on Amazon.

Welcome to the forum Jack.

Someone I consider a master woodworker once told me that a master woodworker is not someone who never makes mistakes. He is someone who is able to cover them up so that no one can tell.
