Offer to build SWMBO something & you need a router to do it. You will understand better on how to use if you have it in your hand. Description will make more sense as you will be more familiar with the router.

It also helps to know what type of work you might be doing. If you have plans for a simple shop then you most likely won't need heavy duty unit. On the other hand if you have big plans you might want to consider the horespower and speed that the router runs at. If possible try to pick one up on sale. I got mine from a retiring woodworker. Was good to learn on then I moved on. Good Luck.

goto:

The Woodworking Channel

and look for "the router workshop." You now should undertake a new religion and these guys are the gurus. Watch and learn in large volumes.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!
Last year I restored a whole apartment using just hand tools, and the result was almost good, as you can see from the photos:

Currently I have to build a very custom door-window combination for the basement: I guess this could be a good start to show I need a router...
Thanks for the suggestion about The Woodworking Channel: I think I'll ransack that site.
