Default Another noob joins the ranks

Hello

I've always been fairly handy, but consider myself to be the ultimate noob with wood working. Recently I had a friend who was selling his dated Craftsman. After three tries selling it, he offered it to me. I was definitely a willing taker.

In my quest to learn how to use it I ran into posts on routerforums.com several times and figured I should go ahead and sign up. I'm pretty sure the info here will keep me reading for quite some time. But any suggestions on got-to-have bits and intuitive usage/safety guidelines are greatly appreciated. I've purchased a 1/4" straight bit to play with for the time being.

Thanks!

Thanks for the warm welcome. If I should start a new post, please let me know. But reading the forums so far, I think I might need a router lift. I intend to work with long straight cuts on mostly smaller pieces for 1/4" dados & tounge in groove. Is some other way of controlling depth using the router table.

And total noob question here, but is there a guide on how to accurately measure where the bit will cut? Some of my attempts at making lap joints before having firewood (as Dr.Zook would say) I ended up with 1/32 or so more than figured.
