Default Umm...

Hi everyone. My name is David, but most of my friends call me Dave or Preacher. I live in a small town in north-central Washington state. I'm not familiar with forums and I'm just starting to put together my first ever woodworking shop. Don't know much about it, but I love the feel of wood and love working with my hands. Any help, advice, or even just generic encouragement would be most welcome as I prepare for a new hobby that I hope to enjoy for many years to come.

Hey Preacher Dave,

You've chosen a great hobby that will keep you sane during the crazy times. I would recommend getting or making a bench first thing. Make it heavy and sturdy. As you build the bench, buy the tools you need. When you're done, you've got a place to work and some tools. Pick another small project (a box you could use as a toolbox for example). Corded tools should include a drill, a jigsaw and a circular saw. Hand tools would include a hammer, set of screwdrivers, crosscut hand saw, an inexpensive set of wood chisels (you can upgrade later), twist drills, a set of spade bits and whatever you see you'll need to complete a project.

Of course, a router will become your best friend at some point in time, as well as a band saw and table saw.

Start makin' some sawdust and enjoy!

Jim

Generic encouragement? I can offer some geriatric encouragement.
Way to go, Sonnyboy!

Seriously, you've chosen a wonderfully diverse hobby. Congratulations.
You've chosen a very diverse forum, too. The knowledge and skill here is phenomenal.

You mentioned "geriatric advice"? Sometimes I think I'm getting close to that. LOL I'll be 55 this September, but don't feel a day over 25. Thanks for the welcome. I'm sure I'll have many, MANY questions in the future.
