Question Amateur Woodworker Needs Advice

I am John Kiener, a "wannabe" woodworker. I have a lot to learn about woodworking and manage to learn something new every time I use one of my power tools. :-)

I am still at the stage where I need to remind myself to cut after the measurement line I have drawn, otherwise the end result is the board is too short.

Right now I am trying to create a Christmas wish list of router bits I will want/need.

QUESTION: When routing all 4 sides of a board, what is the best way to do it to prevent "tear-out"? I have now heard two different approaches: route the end-grain side first; route the long side (with the grain) first. Which one is best?

Thank you.
