Default hinge mortises

I built a baby gate for the top of our stairs for the grandkids and dogs. Any advice on how to do the hinges in to 4x4 posts?

Hi, Dick, and welcome.

For just two, I'd attach them to the gate, then hold it in place and mark the 4x4 post. Then, I'd simply cut the mortises with a chisel. Unless you already have a hinge jig that can be clamped vertically, the chisel would be quicker than setting up for a router and guide bushing.

Hi Dick

That's when the router comes into play, it will do a quick and clean job, just cut up some 1/2" thick MDF stock. 2' wide glue up in to a template ,stick it to the post with some tape, use a pattern bit with a bearing on it. plunge the bit in and clean out the pocket hole lift the template off and your done..

The bit below works very well for that job

I also got a great bit with the jig below..it's now my best bit for doing that type of job and many other jobs with the router..
