Default Aloha from the Islands of Hawaii !!

To many the thought of Hawaii will always bring to mind hula girls , surfing , pineapples , but these island are also full of great woodworking history . The woods of Hawaii are varied and wonderful . It has been my home and source of studies for 43 years , most of them living on the" Big Island " [Hawaii ] . Many of our 'local' wood are found elsewhere but then we have some truely Native Woods worth their weight ,Koa being the top dollar and often is a 'black market' item with it's source of harvest being hidden . But there are 'legitimate' who live and earn a honest lively hood and not to support the 'hood'. I hope to be back to work someday soon , but for now all I can do is recover from a wicked flying accident[survival was iffy to say the least ] but thats another story . Cut only what you afford to , make sure your designs & workmanship will out live you , remember a tree 'Died' for that wood . Aloha ,Mark [email protected]

Aloha Ray,currently I live on Oahu (Wahiawa).I still keep up on my studies in furniture design & improvment of pieces of the 'masters' with our modern technices or tools . Thankfully Haleiwa Surfboard Company's owner, Lon Klein , has keep my job 'open' while I recover from my mis-adventure of last year. Its great to not have that 'worry'(will there even be work 'when' I recover enough to try to get back to woodworking). So as I take steps toward 'work fitness' , I have much time to reveiw the past sucessful designs I have produced while working for other companys or on my own from photos &than entering them into a CAD program to take them apart 'digitally' to redraw them, remeasure them, since it should rehone skills lost while in the coma last year.
Enough about me, so Ray , tell me of your woodworking. Is it your 'work' or pleasure or as some of us have found that nitch in between 'pleasurible work'. Have the Islands been home or as my case , become home? Aloha Mark

Hi Mark

Hawaii has been home now for 20plus years. My woodworking is mostly hobby but I would like to expand it into something more I have several options but no definite direction. I have been having fun working with all the local spies of woods that grow here on the Island. Koa is nice but there are many other interesting woods available to experiment with. I have been wanting to try turning but I need to get a lathe and I’m to cheep to spring for something I don’t know if I will like to do.
Hope you get back in shape so you can do what you enjoy. Aloha, Ray

Hi thar,

Welcome.

Just got back from a cruise on Pride Of America. To much to see in so little time. Want to go back but for a stay on one island and would either pick close to Mt Mona Kea or close to Kona Brewery. Doh, same Island.
