Smile hi from NW England

Hi, just a hello from a newbie. With little or no experience of woodworking but I always fancied "doing things with wood". Eventually after retirement from law enforcement Ive gathered a number of woodworking tools . An impulse buy of a sale item introduced me to the amazing tool that a router is. Couple of months ago I'd recovered a couple of small lengths of +300 year old oak from sons new home ( rotted door frame in an old farmhouse) by stripping it of nails, screws and putting it through a table saw. Then made a passable house sign for him by stencil & hand carving the name. Then decided to try out that router and it turned the plain rectangle to a very professional looking sign. Am hooked!
I've now got a request to do a large ornate tree swing for grand-daughter's birthday with name and message engraved on the edge ....... well the 50cm/2 inch hardwood board is cut, sanded and ready to go. Been practicing free hand routing stencilled letters on other pieces and lots of Web searching for tips, ideas and videos but just waiting for a couple of bits to arrive to test them before taking the plunge (pardon the pun) in to the swing seat. Anyway , that's me - Looking forward to going through some of the posts for ideas , advice. etc. Regards Ray

Welcome to the forum Ray. For ideas and routing techniques you just have to look through members uploads. Exactly where "up north" are you from, I left Manchester in 1964.

I was born in NW England, but my parents brought me to God's country when I was eight.

BTW, where did you see this dust you're talking about. :P

Cheers,
Roger

Hi guys, thanks for responses and the welcome. Origins in Bootle a suburb of Liverpool (for our US cousins thats like Boot Hill in the Westerns... tough and wild at times but still home Now located in Ormskirk a small market town midway between Liverpool and Preston in the County Palatine of Lancashire ( The Queen of England is The Duke of Lancaster (Lancashire)) - easier to Google it than explain here. The Dust I Saw is in my garage where I do most of my 'work' - as my wife says....serious sawdust production with a by-product of the occasional piece of woodwork.

Hi guys, before leaving Manchester for Australia in 1964 I spent several years as a TV technician and so knew most suburbs of Manchester including Moston and in fact my wife as a small child in the early years of WWII lived on Moston Lane. I visited Bootle on a number of occasions and had relatives through the tunnel in Birkenhead.
