Default Dovetail jig bits?

Found this forum & registered looking for guidance regarding my first experience with dovetails & a jig.

'Purchased the Rockler Dovetail Jig kit and 'practiced' cutting my first dovetails on some 3/4" scrape. The half blind went OK, but not happy with the full ones. It appears [to me] that the 8 degree dovetail bit is too short ("B" dimension) to do a full thickness cut without the bit shaft 'cutting' a couple of mm.

The questions: if i purchase a 8 degree dovetail bit with a longer cutting edge (B 0.825) with a width (D 1/2) can I continue to use the Rockler jig but with a 1/2" straight cutter or have I set up the jig wrong and it should handle the 3/4" thick wood as advertised?

What must I consider if I were to use different degree and length dovetail bits with the Rockler jigs - rather than the ones that Rockler furnishes?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Charlie

Charlie,

Can't answer your question. Newbie myself.

But I suggest you post your question to the Jigs and Fixtures or Router Bits - Types and Usage forums. This is the Introductions forum so most members viewing it would be newbies.

Arie.

I have a Porter Cable jig myself.
But if yours works similarly to mine, where you have to cut the tails with a straight bit and use the fingers of the jig that have a taper, then using a different dovetail bit will not work because the angles will be different, 7 degrees vs. 8. The fingers are set at 7 degrees like the original bit.
