welcome! like you, i like to hang out in the garage and cut wood too,
just be sure to be careful, and a circle jig for the router will come in very handy when making your own table.
I am working on version 2 of my router table ... i got a piece of 6' tall by 30" wide 3/4" thick melamine from the ikea discard area for $5. i am making a 4' by 30" table out of it, with 3/4" plywood for support, and 2x3 joists to support the top on the table. i was going to put in t tracks for a fence and a miter track, but now i am thinking that clamping a fence to it gives me more flexibility down the road. i can always route out slots for the tracks if i decide to add them later.
