One quick question. In the UK we can only get plunge routers and not the USA style that twist for depth. Is it the case in all countries that we are limited to one particular design? If so WHO is controlling us?
With me its not whats best that I worry about. Its the option!
I hate not being able to use a dado set on my T/S because some numpty in an office somewhere who has probably never seen one, has decided that they are too dangerous for us. But weapons are freely available.
Sorry for the rant but I just hate people making decisions on my behalf, especially when they don't have the sense to realize that when millions of the things are safely in use already that they must be pretty much ok!
off topic, I have two mates over your way at the moment who are on the last week of a 3 week holiday. They landed in Melbourne and did a week there then on to Sydney and then on to see another of my mates who emigrated to Oz about 10 years ago then to her dads at Rockhampton. Jesus there is some real travel involved in living in Oz, one journey was an 8 hour drive and I think that is thought of as a short trip over your way!
I can see where you are coming from and I agree. I am just too old to let it bother me anymore....VBG.
Distance is something new to a "pommy' when they first hit our shores.
I do Sydney to Melbourne as a two short days trip.........
I was watching a replay of a BBC series, "Coast", and the narrator made the comment that no where in UK is more that 2hrs from the coast (or something similar).
In 2012, my wife and I did a road trip across USA for New York to Los Angeles. That was a drive....
Oh, and yes we can use a dado blade if we have the right saw.
So far then I know that the USA, Canada, Australia and a mate in S.Africa can ALL use dado blades!
Problem we have here is that we get some Di%$ Head sat in an office deciding our fate.
Like you say ordinary blades are just as dangerous, (oops I shouldn't have mentioned that. They will have us using rubber blades next!), and as a rule the dado sets are much smaller diameter than the ordinary blades, so in theory slower tip speed and maybe similar mass.
Its the way they stop us using them that really gets me! They force the makers to modify UK saws to have a shorter arbor, so we can't just buy one on ebay from somewhere else, it would be too wide to fit our saws!
Still I have my trusty Craftsman Radial Arm saw from 1978 with an arbor long enough for 2 dado sets! So at least I can do some dado work. Sadly its a lot more difficult and dangerous on the RAS so banning dados has had a negative effect on me. If I lose any fingers on the RAS I think I'll try a test case against the government eh?
I have found though that if I put 2 ordinary blades and one shim on my tablesaw I can do 6mm dados. Small by your standards but a victory to me!
I must admit I don't use my dado set a lot, but then again it is the one that I got with the craftsman and it is the wobble type not the stack and I was never quite satisfied with the bottom cut of the dados, it was never quite flat due to the limitations of the wobble style blade.
What I am excited about at the moment is the Router Ski idea. Its new to me and I am already planning on making one for one of my heavy 1/2" routers. I would like to see some actual videos of people using the skis for different projects. Can't wait!
