I just finished destroying some wood out back ... and I'll be doing it again tomorrow. I'm a complete novice at any woodworking other than using hand tools to inlet and finish rifle stocks.
I do have the sense to work on scrap as practice pieces with my power tools before messing with good wood. Looks like I'll be working on scrap and practicing for some time to come, though!
I've enjoyed lurking and reading the informative discussions.
Finally got up the money and bought a Craftsman fixed base router (model 17542) which was on sale. My current power tool collection consists of the following: a miserably inaccurate 15 dollar Chinese jig saw; tolerable 15 dollar Chinese drill; tolerable 25 dollar Chinese roto tool and a barely useful Craftsman portable drill press stand.
As I get the money scraped up over the following year I hope to buy a better power tools. But It's a poor workman who blames his tools, so I don't lay blame on my equipment for my sins.
My first completed project was my first ever dedicated workbench. I think it's swell if I say so myself. The next project is a small drill press table
for the Craftsman portable drill stand. The purpose of doing that will be to allow small scale butchery as a learning experience before moving on to making a router table.
I'm 57 and live in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
