| kp91 | Big Bowls! The Bride posted a picture of one of the smaller ones on Instagram, and I was 'asked' to make more. I decided to increase the size a bit, going from a 9" bowl to a 12" bowl. The blank I had planed had the mounting holes from where it was attached to the table base, so I carefully measured so that I wouldn't end up with the holes in the piece. The holes were just shy of an inch deep, so they would be carved out. I was able to use a 1/2" bit instead of a 1/4" bit, so the cutting went much faster. I still have to trim the base and round over the top, but they look good so far! |

The programming part didn't take that long, I bought drawing. The great thing about the Vectric software is how quickly you can generate a 2.5D part from a drawing using their tool path tools. Making the tools paths probably took 15 minutes or so. The milling took much longer, around 4 hours for the 4 bowls. I don't have a huge machine, so I tend to baby it a little. After I see how it does with a certain bit/wood combination I will increase the feed speed a little. My Bride wants a few more, so I will be scaling up from a 9" bowl to a 12 inch, with the same thickness. This will probably go faster, since i can use a 1/2 inch end mill and my big bowl bit. The finish work was a pass with a 3/8 round over and a 1/8 round over on the router table, and quick hand sanding. I fully confess I am in the learning stage, but at the rate I am making mistakes I should be almost competent soon. |

| kp91 | I have a bunch of steel in the bed that you can barely see hanging onto the tailgate, usually I don't leave it down. I made sure I was all the way through and over the line on 'my side' when I parked, but I get the feeling a lot of folks rely very heavily on the backup sensors on their cars. My truck is just shy of 15 years old, so it doesn't have any of that 'newfangled, fancy stuff'. |
