DaninVan Remembered signage from a couple of my old suppliers...They were only partly in jest:

'If I wanted it tomorrow I'd order it tomorrow!' having been in inside sales I can attest to the accuracy and frequency of that customer quote!
and
'Lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on our part.' Basically the supplier's answer to the above quote

sreilly Unless it says Sold and Shipped by Amazon it could be coming from anywhere including China via post office which is what this sounds like but it would be obvious from the stamps. I don't recall ever seeing a guaranteed delivery date short of it being a Prime 2 day order and even then it's not always 2 days from the order depending on when it's ordered. A Prime example is when I order Godiva Chocolates for my wife. Yeah, I'm not stupid, happy wife, happy life. It may be Prime 2 day but they also have been 3-4 days depending on when ordered. During the summer they need to ship with ice packs so it requires more handling hence the longer ship time. You usually know about these when ordered as it will give you the expected delivery in an email after the order is placed.

Next point, it could be completely out of the hands of Amazon. Once it leaves their warehouse it's up to the delivery service to make the on time delivery. I sent an telescope adaptive optics unit to a fella in Australia once and it took over 3 months to get back to me, not delivered to the proper address. That was the postal system and it made it to the proper post office in Australia only about 7 miles from this guys house and sat there until returned back to me. I could track the package up until that post office and then poof, it disappeared. They kept telling me to file a claim for it but I could see where it had last been. I waited and waited until it was finally returned. Then I sent it FedEx and 5 days later the unit was delivered as expected. Stuff happens....If it's really important I always plan way in advance. Better to have something here ahead of schedule than not. But I learned that way late in life.........

etaf complain,
I have had products that have said next day and taken 3-5 days to delivery , and i complained to amazon and got compensated for the issues
its worth letting them know , as they do need to keep on top of any promises on the site , as they do not want disappointed customers and over promises
as i say , this has happened a couple of times to me and often, when I wanted a tool by the weekend to do some work each time once complaint has been accepted and understood, Amazon have been good in making sure I'm still a happy customer.
you probably need your son who ordered it to complain , especially as he ordered based on the information on the site, that you would be getting it by your birthday

with regard delivery, this is typically amazon, just left on door step, or outside or neighbour - very rarely do they knock or leave a note
But i have never lost anything, and would prefer to find on doorstep then the agro of a redelivery or having to collect from a postoffice sorting or other of the centres they use

I would say 80% of the time, i get the items on the first day mentioned on the delivery or earlier - BUT some do take a while

gdonham1 I have a Prime account at Amazon but some things do not ship through prime. I ordered a cleaning pot for my airbursh and it came Fedex and was 2 weeks late. The cleaning pot was not a Prime item. Fedex kicked it around and around but I did finally get it. There is not much anyone can do at this point. You can enjoy your present and try to forget about the bad shipping experience. Unfortunately no one at Amazon or Fedex cares and you did get your stuff. When I get merchandise directly from Amazon i get a little 3X3 receipt. Usually when another merchant ships from their warehouse and not Amazon I do not get a receipt.

DesertRatTom I always get delayed delivery unless it's marked in stock. There's a gigantic Amazon warehouse about 30 miles from here and stuff from there arrives in 36-48 hours. That facility is almost a mile long! FedX rarely delivers around here for some reason, although they have an airport sort facility closer than Amazon's.

All signs of having been delivered by FedEx.

Cherryville Chuck Some things come from an Amazon warehouse and others are only purchased through Amazon but shipped from the supplier. I would complain to them either way.
