Cherryville Chuck In the other video Volvo Trucks: Ballerina Stunt - The Complete Story - YouTube there was a sign saying that it was an unopened highway in Croatia so they must have done a bit of looking to go from Sweden to there. The girl on the slackline is also tethered to the line but it appears that she was past the point of no return when she made it to the other truck.

I watched the video with Jean Claude in it again and had he dropped, his arms and head would have been really close to the truck's front tire.

bobj3 I wonder how long they looked for a flat road ..
Plus they had a steel cable fixed to his leg just to be on the safe side.

Cherryville Chuck You're right Richard, it must be making quite a difference. I know from my experience that if the trailer starts to misalign that you have to steer the cab quite a bit to correct when reversing, more than what Jean Claude would be able to compensate for and he seems to be frozen once they separate. Here's what Volvo has to say about the system.

The Volvo Dynamic Steering system adds an electronically controlled electric motor to the steering gear, which retains hydraulic power assistance. The system is designed to give additional assistance at low speeds, reducing strain on shoulder and arm muscles. The system provides self-centering action in reversing maneuvers. Conventional truck power-steering systems require constant steering correction over heavily cambered roads and when driving in cross winds. The Dynamic Steering system automatically compensates for these conditions, allowing the driver to steer straight ahead. The system also reduces the steering correction needed when driving over surface cracks and potholes.

gwizz Thanks for posting Charles, Jean Claude Van Damme is most certainly aging well, but I was most impressed with the Semi Tractor trailer reversing beside the straight bed and maintaining a straight bearing. No doubt the drivers were exception but the steering control system they are advertising is an outstanding step up in tech that makes it possible and it certainly demonstrates it.

Cherryville Chuck Yes, and she was every bit as impressive. If the rope was 15cm off the ground and motionless I still couldn't do it. I have to agree with Danella too, those were 2 of the most skilled truck drivers I've ever seen. Keeping those rigs perfectly matched in speed and separation is really hard even if you're going forward. Doing it going backwards is 10 times harder.

You have to give Jean Claude Van Damme some credit for having some large cojones and being exceptionally fit. I suspect that one foot may be tethered to one mirror for at least a small margin of safety. Quite a feat just the same.
