Default Mallard Drake Work In Progress

I photocopied this from the intermediate section of Lora Irish's Great Book Of Wood Burning.

Then traced the pattern onto the 8 x 10 piece of Baltic birch plywood using transfer paper and a fine red pen.

Then burned the lines that were traced onto the wood.

That was the easy part. Next step will be the shading which is a lot more of a challenge (for me) to get right . Mine will not look any where near as good as hers but then she is a pro and I am just a beginner.

Then she also shows it colored as a last step so I will probably give that a try too after my colored pencils arrive.

I got the shading in best I could do at this stage of the game..
I am finding that photography also has a learning curve with pyrography because the shading is not doing it justice compared to the way it looks in the hand.

After seeing the photo of the colored one in the book I am wondering if she colors right from the bare outline as shown in the previous photo and does the inward strokes and markings with the pencils or if she burns and colors on top of the burning.

Great work, Bill!

That looks like it took a lot of patience and care.

Thanks for sharing,
