Mid America 2008 Fall Woodcarving Show
Today I went to my first woodcarving show that was held in Omaha. I had a blast at the show and met a lot of great carvers from the area and the club. One of the big woodcarving shops over in Davenport Iowa was at the show with all of there stuff so I dropped way too much money there
Bought a few new knives, some books on basswood egg caricature carving. Amazing what guys do with these egg shaped piece of wood. Told my wife I bought her a dozen eggs
There is a local carver here (P.J. Driscoll) that has won many national competitions including the Woodcarving Congress and the Caricature Carvers Of America competitions. He had a booth today and I was wearing my Omaha Fire and Rescue T-shirt my son gave me and turns out he is a retired firefighter and my son is a new Omaha fire fighter so we had a little chat. He recently one several awards at the 2008 CCA competition. Unfortunately several of his carvings were damaged in shipping and they didn't even get judged for that reason. His fire fighter carvings are really cool and his base ball players are too. Pictured in the album are a couple of his firefighters, and Hammerin Hank and the Bull Pen both which won awards at this show and the CCA awards.
Anyway, it was a blast. Spent nearly my last dime and didn't have enough to join the carving club.. but I will be doing that.
