Default A Halloween cheat

I wanted a little Halloween sign for the candy bowl we leave at the gate on Halloween. Our drive is too long and dark for trick or treaters and we have never had a problem just leaving a bowl with candy and using the honor system. Most of the little ones have parental escorts so it isn’t a problem.

I thought a reminder sign would be a good idea, as well as fun, but I didn’t want to waste any stock that could be used for real projects. So it was time to use the black foam-core material that came as packing with an order of HDU sign material.

Trying to hand letter a sign wasn’t in the cards and since the material is black I couldn’t easily transfer my design to it for painting. Then I had one of those “Aha” moments. Time to cheat. I quickly set up a file in V Carve and then cut just the outlines of the design into the surface of the material with a 7.5º V bit and a .05” depth of cut. Then it was an easy job of cutting the shape on the bandsaw and painting inside the carved lines. Total time including carving, cutting, and painting was about 45 minutes and gave me a nice rustic looking painted sign.

Nice sign, Oliver! That's not cheating, btw. That's using the tools you have available in the best way possible.

They need one of those at Sam's in Bossier City. We stopped by after church to pick up a few things and watched a woman taking free 4 oz. sample bottles of shampoo on one of the end caps at one aisle. It was clearly marked - Free sample (it did not say 'samples'). She put all 10 or so in her coat pockets and then proudly carried one in her hand to show that she got her 'one' free sample. She didn't realize we were 10' away and I said, 'I think you're only supposed to get one...' but she walked off like I was going to chase her down. I probably should have said something to a Sam's employee but I can see them saying they're free, it's ok.

It would be nice to put a motion sensor light out there so when kids walk up, the light goes on. People are often more honest when the lights are on. A solar light doesn't need wiring.
