Default Becksvoort Music Stand

This is my version of Christian Becksvoort's music stand number 4. I wanted to make a music stand for my wife and daughters for Xmas. I searched for ideas and came across a single image of his stand. I made a mock up out of scraps to figure out the angles. In the end, I think I got lucky that it doesn't fall over when anything heavier than a sheet of music is on it. The compound angle on the foot almost broke my brain. I tried every calculation. The leg and front piece were at 10 degree slants meeting at 60 degrees. In the end, I hand sawed it close then used planes to bring it in to flush. A simple enough looking project at the start that really tested my patience by the end. It raises from 26" to 40" at the base. I made from a single board of bird's eye maple and walnut. I cut the through tenon mortise on my Al Thayer horizontal router machine that I learned about on this site. Love that machine.

That's really nice, Jamie! I have been wanting to build a music stand for a while and every time I see one like this my idea changes a bit and moves up the list a notch or two. Very well executed and I'm sure your wife and daughters love this.

Interesting design. Nice project.

Like David, I have wanted to make a music stand for a while but I have just put it off because I really don't have a use for one.

Thanks Jemangin for posting this. Your stand looks really interesting. It certainly looks more inspiring than my own music stand.

I'm a musician as well as working in wood. I've not come across the Christian Becksvoort's music stands, but this could be two reasons:
1. $1+ is a lot of money for a stand.
2. I'm the other side of the Atlantic, in Europe.

As some folk here have mentioned being interested in making stands, it might be useful to mention some comments from a musician's point of view?

Firstly, I'd like the height to be adjustable. Also, I'd like it to be collapsable; to be able to put it behind the couch, or in a closet, or simply out of the way.

The collapsable part might, of course be "just me". European homes can be bit smaller in size than many homes. Also, if your in a position to be spending upwards of $1,100 for a music stand, you probably don't live in a home where space is an issue.
